Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:
- More than 300,000 meals were donated through the State Fair's Hunger Relief Day. Fairgoers had the opportunity to gain free entry to the fair by giving six canned food donations. Smithfield Foods also donated 500,000 servings of protein. Charlie Hale, Senior Vice President of Operations at the Food Bank says that many North Carolinians are still struggling with long-term impacts of the pandemic and rising inflation costs. Since it's conception, the Hunger Relief Day has received more than 6.1 million pounds of food since beginning in 1993. (CBS17, WWAY3)
- Dispatch officers for Raleigh have shared their experience on the night of October 13, handling calls related to the mass shooting that took place. Zachary Williamson said that the situation was "above and beyond" what they'd normally expect, as they shifted from trying to get through calls as fast as possible, to trying to keep up with the situation and what is going on as it is happening. According to the five-day report, it took 10 minutes for officers to get to the scene after the first 911 call. The 911 call center called in the night crew early to have all available operators to help deal with the tense situation. (abc11)
- Lynn Gardner is still in the hospital fighting to recover from her injuries sustained in last week's shooting. Family and friends have remained by her side as she has undergone treatment. On Friday she had another surgery and still remains in the ICU. According to her niece, she is somewhat aware, and can tell that she is in the room. (WRAL) Funerals have already been held for victims, Gabriel Torres (CBS17, NEWSNation) and James Thompson. (abc11, WRAL)
- The turnout for the in-person early voting was approximately the same as in 2018. On Thursday, around 135,400 voters cast ballots, just under the nearly 136,500 that cast ballots in 2018. In person early voting continues through 3 p.m. on November 5, and residents who missed the regular voter registration deadline can register to vote while early voting. (abc11) Election officials are also warning people to keep their eye out as third-party mailed flyers have been reported with false information. (abc11, CBS17)
- After the fair wraps, a major road project will begin near the fairgrounds. Blue Ridge Road at Hillsborough Street near the fairgrounds is a busy, complicated area for drivers, with a railroad crossing not far away. As soon as the fair closes tonight, crews will close down Blue Ridge Road at the railroad tracks near Hillsborough Street to help raise the railroad tracks and eliminate that crossing. When the project is finished Blue Ridge Road well pass beneath Hillsborough Street, the railroad tracks, and Beryl Road. (WRAL)
- Raleigh police are investigating a crash between a Raleigh fire engine and a motorcycle on Sunday afternoon. Officers were called to the scene of Six Forks Road around 1:08 p.m. No firefighters were injured, and the fire engine remains in service. The motorcyclist sustained non-life-threatening injuries. It's unclear what caused the injury. (CBS17)
