Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- On Thursday, Raleigh police released their preliminary report in last Thursday's mass shooting. The report details the timeline of events and gives more insight into the apprehension of the suspect. Upon discovering the approximate location of the suspect, officers were fired upon, injuring officer Casey Clark and returned fire to help provide cover to help get Clark to safety. Officers with the Selective Enforcement Unit were able to identify the exact location of the suspect and weapons in his possession before advancing into the building. Of the approximately 23 shots fired by RPD officers, the suspect only appeared to be suffering from a single gunshot wound, that has not been identified as coming from officers or self infliction at this time. The Raleigh Police Department officers who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative duty, as is standard protocol, and the Department will petition for the release of agency recordings from officers that capture the officer-involved shooting. The collective motive for the attacks is still unknown based on currently available information. The full, four-page report can be found here. (CNN, JournalNow, NBC News, WBTV)
- The Triangle currently only has about 60% of the hospital beds that are needed to effectively treat people in crisis. According to officials, the area need another 580 beds to help meet demand. WakeMed has proposed a new behavioral health center that would be located in Knightdale to add an additional 150 beds for mental health care. They are still waiting on approval from the state to allow the project to move forward, but in a public hearing on Thursday, no one spoke against the idea. (WRAL)
