Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Abortion rights activists were present in Raleigh on Thursday, following a federal judge's decision to reinstate North Carolina's 20-week abortion ban. During the rally, activists warned that North Carolina lawmakers could further restrict abortion access, if the Republican majority is furthered in the midterm elections. Before the federal ruling, abortions were legal until fetal viability, between 24 and 28 weeks, or in cases of medical emergency. According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 1% of abortions nationally are performed after 20 weeks of gestation, but activists say this is just the beginning. (abcNews, WRAL) Millions of dollars will be invested in this year's midterm elections, following the decision to reinstate the 20-week ban. (CBS17)
  2. Authorities announced that charges have been filed in connection with the fatal shooting of Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd. Sheriff Gerald Baker held a news briefing where he announced that Arturo Marin-Sotelo has been charged, as the investigation remains ongoing. Baker identified Marin-Sotelo as "one of the suspects," but did not take any questions during the conference. (The Hour) The funeral for Byrd is scheduled for today. (Spectrum News 1) The Raleigh Police Department also released the name and photo of a suspect wanted for fatally shooting Francisco Javier Rojo on August 7. (CBS17)
  3. Three people carjacked one individual at gunpoint on Wednesday night. The incident took place at the Food Lion on Avent Ferry Road. Authorities have not yet been able to recover the vehicle. A spokesperson with the Raleigh Police Department say the case is unusual, as vehicle thefts are more common than carjackings in the area. Police said the suspects were around 18 to 20 years old. North Carolina State University Police sent an alert to students, as it is unclear if any students were involved in the incident. (WRAL)
  4. A report from Visit Raleigh highlights the county's 2021 pandemic rebound. According to the data, Wake County saw nearly 16 million visitors, who spent $2.3 billion. The number of visitors to the area was 22% higher than 2020, and a majority of the travel was leisure based. The tourism industry was hit hardest by the pandemic, and the report emphasizes that, "one out of every 23 jobs in Wake County is supported by visitation ... all indicators demonstrate we are on a continued growth trajectory." (WRAL)
  5. Wake County political parties have released their endorsements for Wake County school board candidates. Although the school board election is nonpartisan, most of those running are registered with their respective political parties, making them eligible for an endorsement. Of the 29 candidates running, only two are unaffiliated. As education initiatives are becoming increasingly political, each party has selected one candidate in all 9 districts. (INDY Week)
  6. Two suspects were arrested after leading police on an unsafe car chase in Garner, on Wednesday afternoon. Police attempted to stop the speeding vehicle and were then led on a short pursuit. Officers were forced to disengage, as the driver began operating the vehicle in an unsafe manner. The vehicle was later located in an apartment complex across from Garner High Sch0ool. Crisis negotiators talked the suspects into surrendering themselves safely. (WRAL)
