Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. After being cancelled in 2020, First Night Raleigh will be hosting the annual Acorn Drop by Artsplosure at City Plaza. Organizers are working with health officials to identify any necessary precautions they will need to take. For any inside event at First Night Raleigh, guests will be required to show vaccination proof or a negative COVID test as well as wear masks. (WRAL)
  2. Two Wake County law enforcement centers have reported new COVID-19 outbreaks. Wake County Detention Center in Raleigh has reported its 4th outbreak since the start of the pandemic with 18 cases among staff and 27 among inmates as of Tuesday. The Wake County Public Safety Center has also confirmed an outbreak at its facility on Salisbury Street. (CBS17) This comes as North Carolina is reporting new case counts at a three month high. (WAVY)
  3. Raleigh Water will be conducting a full closure of the Wade Avenue westbound ramp off of northbound Oberlin Road and Oberlin Road north exit ramps beginning on January 3rd. The closure is expected to last approximately three weeks and travelers can expect traffic delays in the area. (Patch)
  4. 18 workers have been terminated over refusal to comply with the state executive order requiring vaccination or weekly testing. The 18 individuals represent only 0.03% of the workforce that the order extended to. (NewsTimes)
  5. Congressman Dan Bishop of North Carolina's 9th congressional district has announced a lawsuit to demand that the State Supreme Court and Court of Appeals judges reveal their votes in the decision to push back the 2022 primary. Bishop is seeking bipartisan transparency but has called out Jimmy Ervin who filed for office before the vote. (AP News)
