Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Gun control activists held two rallies in North Carolina this weekend, one in Raleigh. Organizers are hoping to pressure lawmakers into enacting new legislation following mass shootings in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, Texas. The March for Our Lives rally began at 10 a.m. at the Halifax Mall along with more than 400 other cities hosting marches this weekend. (CBS17)
- The United States Supreme Court updated its calendar recently, indicating that opinions on Roe V. Wade could be heard as soon as tomorrow. As tensions remain surrounding the issue, pro-life protestors gathered in Raleigh on Saturday. Dozens gathered outside of a Women's Choice center to share their beliefs. (CBS17)
- One person was killed in a shooting outside of the Carolina Ale House on Falls of Neuse Road late Friday night. Raleigh police have arrested one man and charged him in the death of Jakem Ramiq Reed. Following the shooting, several people ran from the scene along a nearby road, while others clustered in front of the Ale House, a dozen police cars responded to the scene. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- This weekend had a lineup of events including festivals like the NC Hops Fest and vendors are struggling to participate with rising inflation costs. North Carolina is home to the largest number of craft breweries in the Southeast, but some participants were forced to tweak recipes or make other adjustments. The festival began during the pandemic to help brewers who were struggling, but tickets for the event haven't sold as quickly as last year. (abc11, CBS17, Spectrum News 1)
- A Raleigh 911 dispatcher says that the staffing shortages are putting the public at risk, as some shifts are way below the minimum coverage. The employee who shared conditions has worked for the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center for six years, and is leaving due to the stress of the job that is exacerbated by staffing issues. The city policy requires a minimum of 14 staffers each shift, but many are running with only 8 on duty even though call volumes have gone up. (WRAL)
