Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- The City of Raleigh is looking for a real estate brokerage firm to help locate sites for affordable housing. The City plans to use $12 million to buy land or existing buildings for housing. (WRAL)
- In another effort to generate affordable housing, the city's planning commission has voted to recommend changing zoning rules to allow for the construction of tiny homes. The Raleigh City Council is expected to review the rule change and could potentially set a public hearing on it later this year. (abc11)
- The City of Raleigh began cutting off water for unpaid utility bills in February, and now it is shutting off water for around 1,000 accounts each week. The Utility Customer Assistance Program provides an account credit of up to $24o a year to customers who qualify, and can avoid turn-offs by setting up a payment plan. (WRAL)
- Although COVID-19 cases are dropping in NC and Wake County, officials believe that it is too soon to drop mask mandates. The Secretary of the NC Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Mandy Cohen says that schools need to be keeping their mask mandates in place. (WNCT9) Other Wake County officials, including Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin have expressed similar sentiments about the City/County mandates. (WRAL) Cary officials voted to end the town's mask mandate. (abc11)
- Halloween News:
- A popular Halloween destination goes all out with a Halloween house of horrors, but Jesse Jones of historic Oakwood is warning that he will be scaling back to protect from COVID-19. (abc11)
- CBS17 is gearing up for Halloween by featuring some of the top "spooky spots in the Triangle." (CBS17)
- Doctors are warning parents to not get too comfortable this Halloween. With COVID-19 still spreading and what is predicted to be a particularly bad flu season, parents should remain alert. (abc11)
