Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Over the last several months, Raleigh and other NC cities have struggled with a shortage of ambulances and first responders. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is now processing a request to send 50 ambulances and 100 individuals to North Carolina to help with the COVID-19 response. The request is still under review, but FEMA previously sent ambulances to Mississippi and Louisiana. There still is no breakdown of where the units would be deployed or when. (abc11)
  2. A new scam has taken hold of our area. A Clayton woman has been forced to put a sign up on her front door informing people that her house is not on the market. The ordeal started for 82-year-old Betty Moss when a prospective buyer attempted to open the old lockbox still on her home. With the competitive housing market and lucrative due diligence and earnest money deposits on homes, scammers are listing properties in hopes of collecting up-front cash. If you've been home buying, you've likely seen houses sell sight unseen, but it's important to verify the information you see on home buying sites. (WRAL)
  3. Wake County Board of Education discussed testing for coronavirus in schools. 85.9% of school system employees are reported fully vaccinated according to central office staff, with another 2.9% partially vaccinated or planning to be. With President Biden's COVID-19 action plan, any workplace with more than 100 workers must test the unvaccinated staff weekly. The board will also be hearing plans that would include students in the testing. Parents would be asked to sign a consent form for testing, and they would be administered by Mako Medical. No decision is expected to be made this month on the matter. (WRAL)
  4. The chairman of the North Carolina Alcohol Beverage Control Commission has resigned as of Monday. The resignation was given effective immediately and Zander Guy cited the liquor supply troubles as well as deaths of people around him due to COVID-19 in his announcement. Over the course of the pandemic, supply chain issues put stress on the alcohol industry, and with more businesses reopening, the problems have intensified. (CBS17)
  5. Raleigh is seeing a rise in tourism to the city. The Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau (GRCVB) says that corporate travel and conventions are still recouping, but the festivals and concerts are helping draw people back to the area. (abc11) Among the festivals to come, BrickUniverse Lego Convention is being held Saturday and Sunday with updated COVID-19 precautions. (WRAL) In another win for tourism, RDU announced Monday that Taxi Taxi is returning to service the airport after having no taxi service for the majority of the pandemic. (abc11)
