Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson spoke for the first time after a nightclub shooting left six children injured on Friday. On Tuesday, three of the victims were still in the hospital recovering from injuries. Club Dreams also posted an apology on social media and announced it would be closing permanently. Chief Patterson emphasized that "our most vulnerable population is now being touched by gun violence, so we have to do everything we can." (WRAL, WRAL)
  2. A Raleigh neighborhood that is home to a significant Jewish population, discovered anti-Semitic fliers throughout their area. Rabbi Eric Solomon of Beth Meyer Synagogue said that hateful speech can escalate to violence, and it's all too familiar to the Jewish community. Acts of hate, antisemitism and terrorism in the US increased by about 5% in 2021. Neighbors say that the fliers have been a conversation in the neighborhood that has left residents upset and scared. (abc11)
  3. Wake County teachers returned Wednesday ahead of students to prepare for their arrival. On Tuesday the Wake County Board of Education approved a $2.3 billion budget for schools that will increase local salary supplements for teachers by 4%. The county is working to address the bus driver shortage before August 29 when school returns, and the budget includes staffing for four new schools, maintenance, special education and new hires in human resources, technology and support services. (WRAL, WRAL)
  4. Raleigh businesses are celebrating after the official end to North Carolina's COVID-19 State of Emergency, which coincidentally fell on the day of Raleigh's social district kickoff. Many businesses were uncertain of their future during the pandemic and as restrictions have been lifted, dozens turned out to celebrate the Sip N' Stroll district. Many businesses have already installed permanent outdoor seating in response to social distancing and are excited to be able to enjoy traditional settings, as well as the social district. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. A group in Raleigh is calling for the end to North Carolina's death penalty, as 135 people are waiting on death row in the state. The NC Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty marked the 16th anniversary of the state's last execution this week, as executions have been paused pending litigation. The group says that the pause is not enough and needs to be permanently ended. (CBS17)
  6. A large tree fell on Lake Boone Trail at the intersection of Cambridge Road, leaving nearly 1,000 homes in the area without power. The tree fell around 2:30 a.m., and power was restored to most homes around 4 a.m. At 5 a.m. crews were installing a new utility pole to help restore power to the remaining homes. (WRAL)
