Here are the top four stories today in Raleigh:
- An apartment fire on Sunday has displaced 12 people in North Raleigh. The Raleigh Fire Department said that no one has been hurt, and they are still working to determine what started the fire. About 50 firefighters responded around 5 a.m. and worked to put out the fire that was already through the roof. The American Red Cross is working to help those displaced. (abc11, WBTW, WRAL) Fire crews also responded to a car fire at Crabtree Valley Mall on Saturday afternoon. The car fire was in a parking deck, which required a larger fire response because typical fire vehicles could not fit in the garage. (CBS17)
- Drea Kelly, ex-wife of R. Kelly came to Raleigh to speak at the Victory Lap Domestic Violence and Homelessness Awareness Brunch. Kelly spoke from her experience, stating, "We live in a world where women are told to just leave. If you only knew what it took to just leave." Drea was able to leave her abusive relationship with R. Kelly after 13 years of marriage, and he has been convicted of sex crimes against others. (WRAL)
- On Saturday, Dorothea Dix Park saw the return of the Intertribal Pow Wow. This was the second annual Pow Wow, and eight tribes were present and represented during the event. Tribes got the opportunity to show off their outfits, handmade goods and dancing, while non-native community members got the opportunity to learn about the different cultures. North Carolina is home to one of the highest populations of Native Americans east of the Mississippi. (CBS17)
- Relevant statewide news:
- Following President Joe Biden's pardon of Americans convicted of "simple possession" under federal law, Democratic Governor Roy Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein shared their support for the decision. The North Carolina task force on racial equity and criminal justice recommended that state lawmakers replace the misdemeanor charge for up to 1.5 ounces of marijuana possession with a civil offense similar to a traffic infraction, but the General Assembly has not acted upon the recommendation. (WITN, WRAL)
- Planned Parenthood's political arm announced a $5 million investment into North Carolina's battleground races. Absentee voting has already begun, and Republicans are only five seats from having a supermajority and veto override power. Emily Thompson, deputy director of Planned Parenthood Action PAC North Carolina says that several of the state's races play a critical role in maintaining access to care for patients in the state, as well as those traveling from other Southern states with abortion bans. It is also investing money in the North Carolina Supreme Court races as well as the U.S. Senate race between Cheri Beasley (D) and Ted Bud (R). (Spectrum News 1)
- On Friday Night, Cheri Beasley (D) and Ted Budd (R) faced off in their first, and likely only, televised debate. They discussed inflation, abortion and the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. Each candidate was asked questions that they avoided giving a clear opinion on, for Beasley it was her stance on stimulus packages that led to inflation and for Budd it was his stance on abortion access and opposition to exceptions for rape and incest. (Duke Chronicle, WFMY, WUNC)
