Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- An armed carjacker is in custody after fleeing in a victim's car and wrecking during a police chase. The incident was reported just before 4 p.m. on Saturday at the BP gas station on Capital Boulevard. The chase ended as the suspect crashed on Springhouse Lane. No one was injured in the series of events. Christopher Deon Richardson is now in custody and is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. - Raleigh police are investigating a fatal crash that took place on Capital Boulevard near Durant Road early Sunday morning. The accident happened sometime before 5 a.m. involving one vehicle. Police are working to determine circumstances surrounding the crash and have not released information regarding the victim. (WRAL)
- Hundreds of gun safety advocates turned out in Raleigh as part of a national call for action to prevent gun violence. "We're not taking your guns away! We're here to address gun violence," said Sylvia Burns from Moms Demand Action of Gun Sense. According to Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson, the RPD has confiscated more than 570 guns this year, 62% more than this time last year. (abc11, CBS17)
- Hundreds of refugees have been arriving to the Triangle over the last few months and now Refugee Hope Partners is working to open a welcome center on Falls of Neuse Road. The center will offer a variety of services, including citizenship classes and support programs for new mothers. The center's first event will be later this week. It hopes to give refugees a place to feel at home and link them with resources to be successful in America. (CBS17)
