Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Midtown Music announced earlier this week that it will not be hosting its festival this year that was scheduled for Georgia in September. Quick to respond, Governor Roy Cooper posted a response welcoming the festival to host the event at one of North Carolina's outdoor spaces. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported that officials familiar with the cancellation said the decision was a result of a 2014 gun law. Raleigh could be a potential host city for the expected $50 million in economic impact from the festival. (CBS17, WCNC)
- Raleigh police officers peacefully ended a six-hour standoff on Monday afternoon in the Worthdale neighborhood. Officers used a loudspeaker to communicate with an attempted stabbing suspect in the home throughout the day in an attempt to get him to come out. Just before 4 p.m. the man inside the home surrendered and walked out to police. A neighbor knows the man who barricaded himself inside his home. "He's got a good heart. He just needs his medicine," the neighbor said. (CBS17, WRAL)
- An off-duty Raleigh firefighter was on his way to a birthday party when he noticed smoke billowing from a house. His wife called 911 while he helped to get the family out and stuck around to help put out the flames. Michael Fox is a Local 548 Raleigh Professional Firefighter Association member and he spotted the burning home. Nobody was injured during the fire. Fox said he was grateful that he was in the right place at the right time. (abc11)
- Gregory Poole Equipment Company is gifting more than $1 million towards the renovation of Dix Park. The Dix Park Conservancy is supporting the City of Raleigh's plans to turn the 308 acre park into a world class destination. Gregory Poole has designated $100,000 of the gift to be used to renovate the All Faiths Chapel at Dix Park to be named the Greg Poole Jr. All Faiths Chapel. (WRAL)
- The damage caused to the I-440 bridge at Western Boulevard will likely cost at least $200,000 to repair. Crews have been working to fix the damage over the past several nights, but now they anticipate the need of a special contractor to heat and reshape the beam. During the repair work, westbound Western Boulevard will be closed at I-440 and drivers will need to take Hillsborough Street as a detour. NCDOT spokesman Aaron Moody does not anticipate more closures to the I-440 bridge during repairs. (CBS17)
