Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Police are working to hunt down two people in connection to a string of bank robberies on Tuesday. The Raleigh Police Department confirmed the robberies and officers are searching for the suspects near NC State University. The first robbery happened at Wells Fargo on Fairview Road, the second at the Wells Fargo on Clark Avenue, and the third at the Wells Fargo on Colonades Way in Cary. The suspects fled on foot after a traffic stop in the Mission Valley parking lot. (abc11)
- The two-year construction project to widen Atlantic Avenue is set to begin in a few weeks. The project will take place just north of the Beltline, where approximately 29,000 cars drive daily. The one-mile stretch has also seen 295 crashes in the past 5 years. The stretch will be widened, and the intersection at Ingram Drive will be raised to improve sight lines. City officials say that there will be no lane closures during morning or evening rush hours. (WRAL)
- On Monday afternoon, Wake County Deputy Sergeant Ronald Waller has been honored with the Z Award for his bravery. Waller was shot last June while serving an eviction notice in North Raleigh. The award was created by the family of the late Wake County Commissioner Larry Zieverink and recipients receive a small gift of $500. (abc11)
- With businesses and people relocating to Cary, more than $2 billion has been invested in the town through various projects. The new eight-acre park on Academy Street will offer a dog park, bar, market, events pavilion, and more. The Fenton is a near billion-dollar development complex that will be home to a 22,000-square-foot sports bar, hotel, stores, restaurants, apartments, and offices. Many projects are set to be open in the next few years. (CBS17)
- Republican legislators are asking a panel of judges in Wake County to disqualify two assistants who were hired to advise in the gerrymandering case. The Special Masters who were selected are not supposed to have communication with parties involved, however the two in question were hired by plaintiffs in the lawsuit. An attorney for Republicans in the legislature requested that they be removed, and all work produced by the masters in question be destroyed. (CBS17)
