Be On The Lookout + Disturbing TikTok Trend + Rowdy Neighborhood

Welcome to the Raleigh Daily! This is your five-minute guide to the most important things going on in town.

Happy National POW/MIA Recognition Day,

In honor of the 23-year (Apologies on the small typo yesterday, 23 years in the army not 23 years old.) army veteran that I highlighted yesterday, it should come as no shock that this is the holiday I am featuring. One thing I found really cool that I didn't expressly feature alongside that story yesterday is the Freedom Car that the company races. You can purchase merchandise that will help promote awareness and education for the cause.

Along with a nod to the day, you will find news, events and more below, and let me tell you, today is a doozy.

Today's weather, 9/17: Humid and mostly cloudy throughout the day. High: 85 Low: 71.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Wake County Sheriff's Office is looking for an individual who was impersonating a North Raleigh deputy on Thursday afternoon. A witness reported a man in his 20s attempting to make traffic stops around Creedmoor and Interstate 540. The vehicle was a Ford Crown Victoria with a front roll bar, white doors, a black hood, and faded lettering on the side, with "911" written near the gas tank and "In God We Trust" as well as "Sheriff" on the trunk. If you see the vehicle, you should call 9-1-1 immediately. (CBS17)
  2. Raleigh Police are investigating two shootings outside of Raleigh nightclubs that occurred on Thursday morning. The first occurred outside the Bison Bar on E. Whitaker Mill Road, and left a man and woman injured. The second happened outside of Club Amnesia in a strip mall on N. Market Drive and left Devon Maleek Bowser dead at the scene. The shootings are believed to be unrelated, and anyone with information regarding either event is asked to contact CrimeStoppers. (CBS17)
  3. Neighbors around Glenwood South are speaking out about the rowdiness that comes into their area. The residents agree that the traffic is great for business owners, but are tired of people wandering into their neighborhoods around 2:00 am when bars close down. City councilor Stormie Forte speaks on behalf of the district that includes Glenwood South and laid out some of their experiences while emphasizing the need for a more aggressive approach. Another council member supported addressing the concerns but also said that they don't want to "quell the attractiveness aspects of Glenwood South." (abc11)
  4. Students at Wakefield Middle School will be getting limited bathroom time for students after a TikTok trend has students vandalizing the bathrooms. Across the nation students are vandalizing student restrooms for social media clout. Some of the vandalism includes breaking toilets, pulling sinks off the walls, removing soap dispensers from the walls, and breaking water vents/pipes. In response to the costly vandalism, the school has been forced to close the bathrooms between classes and have students personally request bathroom time or take a supervised full class bathroom trip. (WRAL)
  5. A fire broke out in an apartment complex near Pullen Park on Thursday. The fire was reported before 5:15 am at the Pullen Station Lofts apartments on Ashe Avenue when a man saw smoke inside his unit. Firefighters discovered the fire was coming from an exhaust vent below the fan, and they were able to extinguish the fire with no one injured. The home was left with minor smoke damage. (WRAL)

Wowza, this issue is jam packed with so much that I'm glad to know. From safety concerns, to vandalism, there was no shortage of shockers in this issue. I also hope some of you note the school fundraiser in the notebook. I want to emphasize if there's a spirit night happening, I 100% want to feature it. If someone's going out anyways, hopefully they'll consider going somewhere that will actually give back to the community.

Anyhow, Thanks for following along and staying informed! See you tomorrow morning for your next update. If you're enjoying these newsletters, consider inviting some friends and neighbors to join. You can send them this link to subscribe.
