Happy International Beer Day,

Today's weather, 8/6: Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 86 Low: 74.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. State lawmakers have approved the bill that would require minors to have parental consent before receiving vaccines that are authorized under "emergency use" by the FDA. House Bill 96 was originally drafted with the intent to allow pharmacists to administer vaccines and other injectable medications, and state lawmakers added the provision requiring parental consent with little pushback. In July, Governor Roy Cooper said he had concerns about the requirement and would consult NCDHHS before deciding the bill's fate. (WRAL)
  2. PNC Arena is looking to hire 500 part time workers as events are returning. They will be hosting a hiring event on August 12 from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm, and offering competitive wages. A majority of the positions require applicants to be 18 or older, though there are some available to persons 16 or older. They will be looking for cashiers, changeover crews, concession stand leaders, cooks, parking attendants, security, and more. (CBS17)
  3. Hospitals in North Carolina are experiencing a spike in non-COVID related illness. The increase in hospitalizations is common this time of year, but with the nursing shortage, they are at capacity. The hospitals are concerned that if a spike in COVID-19 cases does occur, they will not have the staff to handle it. Chief Medical Officer at Duke Regional Hospital, Dr. Adia Ross asks that anyone with non-life-threatening injuries seek care at an urgent care facility or at their primary care doctor before going to the emergency room. (CBS17)
  4. A bill to legalize sports betting has received approval from its first Senate Committee on Wednesday. The goal of the bill is to regulate sports bets, and gain revenue for the state on taxation. The bill was originally filed in early April, and new analysis estimates the bill will generate anywhere from $8 million to $24 million in annual revenue. Opponents fear that gambling will have a negative effect on sporting events, but advocates say it is happening regardless and should be regulated. (CBS17)
  5. The North Carolina House voted on Wednesday to accept the Senate changes that would bar convicted felons from running for sheriff. The legislation states that even if someone has had a felony expunged from their record, they would still be ineligible to run for sheriff. Any candidate will be required to provide a form confirming that they have never been convicted of any felony. (WITN)

Alright friends, if you haven't experienced First Friday, do you actually even live in Raleigh? I kid, but sincerely, if you haven't gotten the chance to go, you should probably fix that. Whether you're celebrating a beer, a root beer float, or just another day in the life, I hope you kick off your weekend right.
