Happy Woman's Equality Day,
It also happens to be National Dog Day, National Toilet Paper Day, as well as my birthday. All of these "days" are pretty fitting for the day I was born, especially Toilet Paper Day.
In all seriousness though, I have a roundup of policy headed to Cooper's desk, a follow up in the death of Robert Earl Taylor, and of course news about COVID-19 is unavoidable and necessary. So check all that out below, as well as events and so much more.
Today's weather, 8/26: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 91 Low: 74.
Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Three bills have gotten the final legislative Ok and will be sent to Governor Roy Cooper's desk to be made law. The first is a police reform measure designed to get rid of undisciplined officers and put an emphasis on mental health assistance for others. (Spectrum News 1) The second raises the age at which a child can be prosecuted from 6 to 8. (Spectrum News 1) The last bill will make it easier for medical facilities to expand treatment space and purchase equipment. (WITN)
- A woman was shot multiple times inside an apartment in Raleigh on Tuesday night. The shooting occurred at the Bacarra luxury apartment complex near the old Cary Towne Center site and I-40. Police believe the shooting was domestic-related and poses no ongoing threat to the public. The woman was transported to the hospital where she was in stable condition on Wednesday. (WRAL)
- Two weeks after the passing of Robert Earl Taylor, a couple has been arrested and charged in relation to his murder. The incident that occurred on August 8 on Boyner Street, left Taylor with multiple gunshots and he died at the hospital. Raymond Arrington was arrested on Tuesday for the murder and Britney Johnson was charged with accessory after the fact. Police have not released any additional information at this time. (CBS17)
- After returning to in-person learning, many schools are finding it difficult to manage the exposure. In the month of August more than 500 cases were reported among students and staff at Wake County public schools. Anyone who has been in close contact for a total of 15 minutes or more are required to quarantine. Wake County couldn't provide a number of how many students were currently quarantined, but with the option to remove masks for eating, drinking and outside time, many are experiencing 15+ minutes of close contact. (CBS17)
- As COVID numbers continue to surge, hospitals are having to adjust their ICU capacity to handle the influx. The UNC Health Care System has increased its maximum admittance to accommodate the number of patients coming to the hospital, including an increase in younger patients. (abc11) With the increase in COVID-19 numbers, the North Carolina House is also pushing to pass a bill to protect visitation rights in most health care facilities including nursing homes and hospitals.
