Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- As plans for North Carolina Freedom Park take shape, archaeologists hope to get the opportunity to dig up some Black history before the construction starts. Archaeologists are using ground-penetrating radar to discover what lies beneath the gravel parking lot in hopes of finding clues about the history of enslaved people who lived there. (JournalNow)
- A Wake County family's story spread after their son's truck was stolen from the parking lot of his school. The family was able to locate the truck as well as the ashes of Corey Padgett, the family's older son. A viewer was driving by the Brook Hill Apartments and saw the vehicle as well as the keepsake and was able to contact the Raleigh Police Department. The family was able to confirm the vehicle was theirs and retrieve their son's remains.(WRAL)
- Raleigh will see the 'Night of Nightmares' haunted car wash opening later this October. With concerns for COVID-19 still high, the haunted car wash will allow customers to be scared by clowns, graveyards, haunted cornfields, and other frights in a safe environment while also getting their car washed. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina State Fair has announced two new rides that will be opening along with the fair this year. The Itsy Bitsy Spider Wheel is a giant illuminated Ferris Wheel, and the Sky Hawk will "take riders high above the midway." (WRAL)
- On the border of Wake and Chatham county a massive fire destroyed a veterinary hospital for horses as well as the owners home. Fire crews took more than 8 hours to extinguish the flames, and although all the horses were saved, the other pets are not all accounted for. Fernando Cardenas hopes insurance can help rebuild the property, and has received help from the community to continue their operations in the mean time. (FOX8)
