Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Wake County Schools has issued notices to parents informing them that there is expected low bus driver availability on Friday. A significant number of Wake County bus drivers followed through on their plan to not work on Friday, in a push for increased pay. As there has been a bus driver shortage from the beginning of the year, drivers have been forced to take on extra routes without additional compensation. (abc11)
- The Gerry's Partisan Pizza food truck made a one-day appearance outside of the North Carolina legislative building on Thursday, to try to send a message to lawmakers. The food truck served up pizza that was sliced in the shape of the state's congressional districts. As the North Carolina General Assembly is working on congressional maps, the Princeton Gerrymandering Project has given the current suggestions grades based on fairness and competitiveness, and thus far the maps have earned grades from C to F. - Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson spoke at a rally at Halifax mall in downtown Raleigh on Friday. Earlier this week, Robinson expressed that he is "95% sure" he will run for governor in 2024, as Governor Roy Cooper will not be able to seek re-election due to term limitations. The rally was hosted by the group "Return America," a group that is trying to "build a network of churches and individuals," to "promote Judeo-Christian values." (WRAL, Daily Journal)
- A serious crash occurred on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary on Friday morning. Two vehicles were involved with an SUV having sustained severe front damage, and a sedan with bad damage on the side. (WRAL) Garner police are still investigating the crash that occurred on Buffaloe Road on Thursday. Authorities estimate that the driver, Jacob Rose was travelling approximately 80 mph in a 35 mph zone when he ran off the road and crashed into a group of trees. (CBS17)
- Stephanie Hopkins has announced her intention to join the race for Wake County sheriff today. Hopkins has history working at maximum security facilities within the NC Department of Corrections, as well as in healthcare nursing. (CBS17) This comes just one day after former Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison formally announced his candidacy for his former position as well. (CBS17)
