Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The NHL Stadium Series brought thousands to Raleigh over the weekend. Restaurants in the area got the opportunity to serve a record number of customers. According to Jesse Gibson, the manager of Backyard Bistro, crowds began forming on Thursday and grew through the weekend. The Saturday rush was the largest as the Canes overtook the Washington Capitals 4-1. The economic impact has not been tallied yet, but it is expected to be over $12 million based on ticket sales data. (abc11, Spectrum News 1)
  2. The former long-time director of children's ministry at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Creedmoor Road has been arrested for sex crimes involving a child. Kenneth Newcomer, age 61, is facing two counts of first-degree sex offense with a child and three counts of indecent liberties with a child. Court documents state that the offense took place in August of 2007 and involved a 7-year-old child. The church's senior pastor, Richard Goeres, sent a letter out to the congregation asking any other victims to come forward. (WRAL)
  3. The historic Ivey-Ellington House is being relocated to a new location. The house is moving from Chatham Street to Academy Street in Cary, as room is made for a new development. The house is representative of Gothic Revival cottage architecture in Wake County and will be restored when it reaches its new location. (abc11)
  4. The Raleigh Convention Center hosted the Downtown Raleigh Home Show over the weekend and gave people the opportunity to explore ideas to refresh their living space. Realtor Becky Dunn shared the challenges homeowners are facing related to supply chain issues and staffing following the pandemic. (abc11)
  5. On Sunday evening, Raleigh Transportation closed East Hargett Street in order to set up a crane. E. Hargett between Fayetteville and South Wilmington streets will continue to be closed through Wednesday. The closure takes place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and drivers will have to take a detour. (CBS17)
