Happy International Lottery Day,
Today I have news about vaccination requirements, possibilities to pass on antibodies to babies, and a shift in the effort to have more regulation in High School athletics. All that, events, and more are below.
Today's weather, 8/27: Humid throughout the day. High: 92 Low: 74.
Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- More restaurants in the Triangle are requiring proof of vaccination in order for entry to dine. Business owners who have implemented the policy say that a majority of their regular customers applaud the move and feel more comfortable dining there. Governor Roy Cooper compares business mandates to allowing school districts to define their own masking policies. More than 20 locations across the Triangle have announced vaccine requirements, and WRAL has compiled a list. (WRAL)
- One Raleigh mother is sharing her story after choosing to get vaccinated in her third trimester of pregnancy and passing on antibodies to her child. While pregnant, Melissa Barr was afraid that she might get COVID and risk her life or the life of her child. She has been sharing her child's antibody-positive test on social media and talking to moms-to-be about it. A recent study from the CDC says only a quarter of pregnant women are vaccinated although obstetrics groups are recommending pregnant people get the vaccine. (CBS17)
- One person has died in a car crash that occurred on Wednesday evening. The crash happened when Jason Travis Wills of Apex was speeding on I-40 and crashed his car into a tree. Wills was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. No other vehicles were involved in the incident and reports say that there were no brake marks or tire impressions leading up to the impact site. (CBS17)
- The suspect in the death of a young woman on Tuesday led police on a manhunt in Pennsylvania. Taylor Johnson is believed to have shot a woman in a southwest apartment in Raleigh near Cary Towne Center as part of a domestic dispute. Johnson led police on a chase Wednesday around 2:30 pm and crashed his car near Harrisburg. After 5 hours, police were able to establish a perimeter around the suspect, at which time he turned the gun on himself and took his own life. (WRAL)
- The North Carolina Senate has been pondering replacing the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, however the legislators have shifted the goal to have more control over the board instead of outright replacing it. The legislation that cleared a Senate committee will direct the State Board of Education to enter a written agreement with the nonprofit by October 15 on how to administer athletics. The association would also be subject to public records and open meeting laws. (WECT6)
