Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Last weekend, the Browne family discovered their camper was stolen by a driver in white truck, now they are learning they might not be the only victims. The video was shared on Facebook and NextDoor. Workers said that a trailer with a large pressure washer, water tank and tools were stolen. Vice President of Operations at American Woodyards TJ Hughes said he acted like an employee before taking the equipment. Both parties are hoping the public can help identify the thief, believing there could be more victims. (WRAL)
- On Friday night, Raleigh's Shimmer Wall was lit orange, for gun violence awareness. On Saturday morning survivors and city leaders came out to the city's gun violence awareness rally. The event is seeing more attention this year in wake of the multiple mass shootings across the nation in the last three weeks. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL) As gun violence awareness activities began, students from Sanderson High School were reacting to the code red lockdown after a nearby shooting. (WRAL)
- The Raleigh fire and police associations are pushing city leaders to increase pay for existing officer salaries. The city's budget proposal increases minimum starting salaries, but does nothing for existing officer salaries. The local police association is asking for 10% raises across the board and the ability to choose overtime pay instead of compensatory time to help with staffing shortages. The firefighters association wants a minimum starting pay of $52,900 as the current proposal would leave firefighters taking home less than the living wage for city employees who work typical 40 hours. (CBS17)
- Nearly 200 people came out to Providence Baptist Church on Friday to pack meals for Ukrainian refugees. Friday marked the 100th day of Russia's invasion into Ukraine, and millions have been displaced. The goal was to package 50,000 meals on Friday, with two other sessions planned for the weekend. (abc11)
- Triangle Restaurant Week kicks off tomorrow, and local business owners who are still working to bounce back from the pandemic are taking the opportunity. Yong Hearts distillery is still in their first year, and are participating in the event, hoping that the location provides an extra boost. The number of restaurants participating is down from previous years as wholesale food prices are up 18% and labor shortages persist. (CBS17)
