Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Authorities in Raleigh have been investigating high-end car thefts in the area. Investigators now believe that the theft has connections to Charlotte. According to authorities, a group of eight people broke into a dealership, and in just 15 minutes, drove away with $600,000 worth of cars. Similar events have happened at dealerships in Winston-Salem and in Charlotte and are believed to be part of a larger crime ring. (WSOC-TV)
  2. Chris Weeks, the director of entrepreneurship at Wake Tech is speaking out about the impacts of power outages on small businesses. After the attacks that left most of Moore County without power for days, many small businesses worked to keep their community going. Although business interruption insurance can help cover some costs due to lost business, not all policies covers power outages. (FOX8)
  3. Officers ran to respond to gunfire that broke out near police headquarters. The incident took place around 5:15 p.m. at an apartment complex near the Garner Police Department headquarters on 7th Avenue. Police officers ran across 7th Avenue to investigate when they heard around six gunshots. No suspect was found. (CBS17)
  4. As inflation continues to put a strain on many households, big box stores may need to increase prices for other reasons. Retailers like Walmart and Target are experiencing more theft this year, with Target seeing a 50% increase year over year. Walmart says that the increase in shoplifting could lead to higher prices and closed stores if the problem persists. A large portion of the crime is taking place via organized retail criminals as opposed to petty theft, and Target has seen more than $400 million in losses this fiscal year. (abc11)
  5. Gathering Gallery opened in Raleigh on Black Friday 2021. After more than a year of operation, owner Erica Heilmann is working to bring unique local items to Raleigh. Heilmann works hard to stock her shop with brands that you cannot find elsewhere, many of which are veteran-owned, women-owned and small, niche brands. Heilmann also takes extra care to provide aisles that are wide enough and hires a diverse staff. (WRAL)
