Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Cary High School went into a code red lockdown on Wednesday morning after gunfire reports around 11:38 a.m.. Cary police confirmed that a single round was fired in the school bathroom, and damaged a toilet. The school's resource officer responded and called for backup, and police believe that only one student was involved in the incident. The lockdown remained in effect as the student was being questioned, but was lifted around 2 p.m. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- The Wake County health department has gone through and inspected food vendors that are participating in the fair. County officials say that failing inspection is very rare, especially since many of the vendors have participated in the fair in previous years. All 150 vendors will be checked to ensure that food is being stored at safe temperatures, with proper washing stations sanitary food prep and disposal. - The Raleigh metro area has ranked #8 in the second annual Tech Innovation Index. Last year Raleigh ranked #7, with tech worker demand influencing the drop the most. Raleigh did rank second in the nation for innovation and 6th for tech worker supply. Durham was also ranked at #6 for the second year in a row, and Charlotte came in at #28. (WRAL TechWire)
- A Raleigh family is asking for community help locating 46-year-old Sterlena Bland who has been missing since last month. Bland suffered lingering effects after catching COVID-19, including a "cloudy mind" that seemed to get worse. Sometime after September 23, she disappeared. Raleigh police are investigating the case, but they and her family are asking anyone who may have seen her or her burgundy Ford to come forward. The nature of her disappearance is still unknown. - Tomorrow, October 14 is the official deadline for voter registration. You can register to vote online through the DMV website, by mail/email/fax, or by visit any Wake County public library before 5 p.m. If you miss the deadline, one-stop early voting begins on October 20 and runs through November 5. If you are in need of an absentee ballot, the last day to request one is November 1, by submitting a request online or mailing a form to the Wake County Board of Elections. (INDY Week)
- The Triangle Area Office Building Association is hosting its fifth annual "Battle of the Broker Bands" today to raise money for Neighbor to Neighbor and Haven House. A spokesperson for Neighbor to Neighbor says that the nonprofit plans to use funds to support its academic mentoring program that currently serves 125 students. Haven House CEO says that the proceeds raised will provide critically needed operating support for their 11 programs helping youth experiencing homelessness. (WRAL)
