Today's weather, 9/20: Rain in the evening and overnight. High: 81 Low: 72.

Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Shortly after 9am on Monday, a car accident involving a pickup truck and a school bus left two children seriously injured. The children, age 3 and 4, were unrestrained inside the vehicle with their father and pregnant mother when a school bus cut in front of them. The bus driver was sited for causing the wreck and the family was taken to the hospital for treatment and observation. (CBS17) In an untimely coincidence, yesterday also marked the start of Child Passenger Safety Week. (CBS17)
  2. Amidst the current housing shortage, those who have opted for new construction homes are facing a new set of challenges. Early in the pandemic, lumber prices rose and builders shifted to using more metals where they could. Now they are being impacted by a nationwide aluminum shortage. Because of the aluminum shortage, many home construction projects are being delayed and/or seeing price increases. (WNCT9)
  3. Scientists at NC State University are trying to bring awareness on new information available regarding air quality in schools. With COVID-19 infection rates increasing in the Triangle, Wake County Public Schools has taken some steps to improve air quality, but recent studies show that a layered approach to risk mitigation will have the greatest effect. Although the schools have upgraded their ventilation, they still fall short of the Harvard Healthy Building target of five-six air changes per hour. The upgrades outlined by NCSU researchers could potentially help reduce the risk of exposure in schools by over 90%. (HeraldSun)
  4. Access points along the Neuse River in Raleigh have been closed as crews remove logs and other debris from the water. The crews began the endeavor on Sunday and closed down the canoe and kayak launch points for safety reasons. The Department of Transportation and the railroad company are partners in clearing the log jams and closures will likely remain until the clearing is completed. (CBS17)
  5. Wake County has reported that as of the September 15 deadline for COVID-19 vaccinations, 87% of it's employees were fully vaccinated. The deadline granted all fully vaccinated employees $250 and two additional leave days upon completing their vaccination. The county employs 4,185 people and of those, 3,623 are completed their vaccines by the deadline. The county employees outpace the general public with a 76% rate for Wake County adults. Wake County released a statement that they are working to verify the report against state numbers to ensure truthful, accurate claims. (CBS17)

That's all for today. I know heading into the week can seem like such a let down, especially in comparison to Brewgaloo and 919 day, but you've made it through Monday and another weekend is right around the corner. Even if you are like me and work in retail, a busy Saturday moves a whole lot faster. So celebrate making it through another day and we'll catch up again tomorrow.
