Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh has elected four new city councilors who are promising to give neighbors more of a say in new development. The council has been pro-growth, but with the newly elected members, it could create a deadlocked 4-4 split on growth decisions. Mary-Ann Baldwin won her re-election bid for Mayor, and when asked she said, "You can't stop growth. ... We just have to figure out how we want to grow." (CBS17, WRAL) A major concern among residents has been the cost of living in the area, however Wake County voters passed all bond referendums. The referendums will amount to an additional $180 in taxes on homes assessed at $300,000 in Raleigh. (abc11, CBS17)
  2. The Salvation Army of Wake county, Concord Hospitality and Feed the Children have partnered to hand out food, toys and essential items ahead of the holidays. Many Wake County families worry about where their next meal is coming from, but the partnership hopes the event will provide one less problem for them to worry about. The food giveaway was a free event that was operated on a first-come, first-serve basis, and as of 1 p.m. all boxes were claimed. (CBS17)
  3. Earlier this summer, a 12-year-old was lured into human trafficking in Raleigh and her mother is speaking out to warn others. Brieania Pinnock has been charged with multiple charges linked to the alleged prostitution of the victim. (WRAL) Pinnock spent days and nights in mid-June in an apartment complex parking lot, befriending the middle schooler who lived nearby. On June 18, Pinnock and the teen were gone. The victim's mother was able to get her daughter back after someone recognized her daughter in a video, and was told that she had overdosed at a hotel in Raleigh. It took three days for her daughter to return to feeling normal, but the experiences linger, and she has to take medication due to contracting STIs. The mother says that she hopes her experience serves as a wakeup call for other parents, that human trafficking is not just "in other places," but right here in Wake County. (WRAL)
  4. Wake County has approved updates to the shooting ordinance for unincorporated areas. The board of commissioners approved several changes, including an increase from 100 to 300 yard distance requirement between any home, building or livestock when discharging a firearm. You must have a backstop to block bullets when shooting, and its prohibited to discharge a firearm between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. The rules go into effect on December 9 and the penalty for violation has been raised to the statutory limit of $500. (abc11, WRAL)
  5. Pullen Park's Holiday Express is returning this year after a two-year hiatus, but tickets are already sold out. Tickets went on sale at 9 a.m. on Thursday, and by 10:30 a.m. they were already sold out. Before the pandemic, tickets sold at a rate of 1,000 per minute. The event is scheduled for December 1-11 and December 13-18 from 5-8:30 p.m.. (CBS17) The City of Raleigh has posted other opportunities to celebrate with Raleigh Parks during the holiday season.
