Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- On Tuesday, the Wake County City Council met and discussed two major topics that have been in discussion for some time.
- City leaders voted to continue to allow expanded outdoor dining, and discussed recommendations from a "public realm study." With the new insight, in just a few years, businesses will pay to utilize the space. The fees will be delayed for two years to help business owners recover from COVID impacts. (CBS17)
- With Wake County residents still calling for more exotic animal regulation, it was a topic of discussion. After tasking the City's Growth and Natural Resources Committee with coming up with a recommendation for a new ordinance, they could not come to a consensus and sent the issue back to the city council. The city has opted to discuss the issue at a later date when they can receive a full presentation on options from legal staff. (WNCT9)
- On Tuesday, Wake County Public Schools also discussed some of the likely changes to come.
- The Board of Education approved allowing the district to apply for a federal grant to help transition two elementary schools into magnet schools. (WRAL)
- The school board discussed the potential of implementing a social and emotional learning curriculum for K-8 schools in an effort to tackle mental health concerns. (abc11)
- It also discussed mask mandates in schools, and rejected adding children age 2-4 to the existing rule. (WRAL)
- A Raleigh woman is wanted in the Durham crash that killed her infant daughter and critically injured her 4-year-old daughter. The crash occurred in January 18, and her 4-year-old daughter has since been released from the hospital. On Tuesday, Durham police announced several felony charges that Shanelle Johnson is facing in connection to the incident and are seeking information on her whereabouts. (CBS17)
- The PNC Foundation announced on February 1 that it made a major investment to five North Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities. NCCU, Fayettville State, Elizabeth City State, Johnson C. Smith University, and Winston-Salem University will all receive a portion of the money over three years to help introduce new programs, opportunities, and advanced technology. (abc11)

- North Carolinians can now obtain birth control and many other treatments without a prescription as part of House Bill 96 that went into effect on Tuesday. (Spectrum News 1)
- The two new towers planned for Glenwood South will include apartments as well as a hotel. (CBS17)
