Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Raleigh City Council adopted a new district map that was drawn by non-partisan professional staff. Seven of eight city councilmembers voted in favor of the maps, however Council Member David Cox who was the sole dissenter, believes the map to be racially discriminatory. Cox believes that many minority voters in his district were moved into District A, diluting their power. He has also not announced if he will seek reelection along the new lines yet. (abc11)
  2. A Raleigh man has been arrested after a Sunday night traffic collision left one dead. The incident happened at 8:20 pm on New Bern Avenue. A pedestrian was hit and died at the scene. Jai Pal faces charges of driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle. (CBS17)
  3. Two crashes left drivers striking buildings in Raleigh. On Sunday night a single vehicle ran off the road and struck a Raleigh home, injuring the driver but not the family that was home at the time of the incident. (WRAL, WRAL) On Monday morning a driver crashed into a State Employees Credit Union near NC State's campus on Hillsborough Street. Officials say the driver lost control of the vehicle in a roundabout, no one was hurt and alcohol was not involved. (WRAL)
  4. The City of Raleigh will be participating in Lights Out for bird migration. From March 15 to May 31, the city will turn off all non-essential lighting between 11:00 pm-6:00 pm. The city encourages residents to join the Lights Out initiative to help protect migrating birds. (RaleighNC.Gov)
  5. Governor Roy Cooper is warning North Carolinians to prepare for spring severe weather. Gov. Cooper proclaimed March 6-March 12 as Sever Weather Preparedness Week. On Wednesday, March 9 there will be a statewide tornado drill at 9:30 am that will be initiated through test messages via the Emergency Alert System on radio and TV. (FOX Carolina)
