Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- The City of Oaks Marathon saw a huge turnout on Saturday. Organizers say that roughly 6,000 people participated in this year's event. There were bands playing and people cheering through the 13.1 mile run. Because of growth in the Triangle, they had to increase staffing and patrols for the race with lots of course monitors. Organizers will be reaching out to runners asking for input as they plan for next year's race. (abc11, CBS17)
- The North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival has announced it will be holding a sensory friendly night in December. The one-night event will allow individuals on the autism spectrum and those with sensitivity issues or developmental disabilities to enjoy the spectacle. The night is presented in partnership with We Rock the Spectrum Kids Gym. The festival will run from November 18 to January 8, and the sensory-friendly night will take place on December 6. (CBS17)
- The Wake County Animal Shelter is still struggling as it is at capacity for animals. The cost of inflation has been impacting pet owners, leading many to surrender their companions. A survey by Veterinarians.org reflects this, as nearly a quarter of pet owners considered rehoming or surrendering their pet in the last 12 months. Even if you are unable to adopt, it is looking for pet foster parents as well. (abc11) Julie Stolzer is trying to make it easier for residents to adopt, by donating $5,000 to go towards adoption fees for those adopting from the Wake County Animal Center. (WRAL)
- Two Wake County Sheriff's deputies suffered minor injuries after catching a man who was armed with a knife on Sunday. An incident was reported around 9:15 p.m. at the Resco Mart gas station on Old Stage Road and Swift Creek Lane. Officers responded to reports of a man inside the gas station causing a disturbance, and upon arrival the man fled. Deputies were able to apprehend and disarm the man during a foot chase, but they did sustain minor injuries that were treated at the scene. (CBS17)
- Two violent crimes impacted the Raleigh area on Sunday:
- Police are searching for a suspect who shot and killed a woman around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Family members of 27-year-old Jamila Rogers say that she was the victim of domestic violence, and was killed during an altercation among several people. A memorial has been created for Rogers on Bragg Street. (WRAL)
- One man was stabbed in the neck outside of the Wake Inn on New Bern Avenue on Sunday night. Police say the suspect and victim knew one another. The victim has non-life-threatening injuries. (CBS17)
