Happy World Letter Writing Day,

Today I have news regarding the effects of Hurricane Ida on our area, restaurants that closed as a precaution to the public, and an amazing group of students that joined together to rescue their fellow classmate. All that, events, and more below.

Today's weather, 9/1: Rain and humid throughout the day. High: 84 Low: 69.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Three Raleigh area restaurants were forced to close temporarily following possible COVID-19 exposure to staff. The Fiction Kitchen announced the closure via social media even though its crew is fully vaccinated and tested regularly. Big Ed's City Market also closed for staff to be tested for COVID-19. "Big Ed" Watkins, the founder of Big Ed's died earlier this year after contracting COVID-19 while recovering from a car accident. Union Special on Crabtree Boulevard was closed on Monday after an employee tested positive for a breakthrough case. All locations have since reopened. (WRAL)
  2. The Colonial Pipeline has resumed normal operations after shutting down lines 1 and 2 over the weekend in anticipation of Hurricane Ida. Many gas station managers expressed that they were not concerned about potential fuel shortages or cost inflation as a result of Hurricane Ida. The pipeline closure was not expected to be a lengthy one. (abc11, CBS17) Remnants of Hurricane Ida are expected to bring rain and severe storms to central NC today. (abc11)
  3. A group of NCSU graduate students helped relocate an Afghanistan family in the Triangle. The father of the family of four was studying alongside the group of students until returning home as a result of remote classes. When the U.S. withdrawal led to the Taliban's return to power, the group of students knew their classmate was in danger. The students utilized their cumulative network of contacts to help the family get to the Kabul airport and out of the country. The family has a home to live in thanks to the Welcome House in Raleigh. (WRAL)
  4. Nearly half of all new reported COVID-19 clusters over the past two weeks have come from K-12 schools. Health officials reported 114 new clusters, 50 from K-12 schools, 15 in colleges and universities, and 12 coming from childcare centers. The biweekly report shows cases associated with clusters in schools increased significantly, peaking in the month of August. North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is expected to release its active cluster list among schools and daycare settings. (CBS17)
  5. On Monday, Governor Roy Cooper made a move that many expected, vetoing a bill that would do away with the permit from the county sheriff's office before buying a pistol. The Republican-controlled General Assembly does not currently hold a veto-proof majority in the House or Senate, and only two Democrats supported the measure. Advocates for the bill say the process is redundant alongside the national checks that gun dealers must conduct, however Cooper believes that the legislation will make it easier for guns to end up in the wrong hands. The NC Sheriffs' Association currently backs the repeal after being overwhelmed with permit applications during the pandemic. (Courier-Tribune, abc11)
