Happy National Pierogi Day,

It's hard to focus on news now that I have Pierogis on the brain, but below there's news about another company with a vaccine mandate, expanding clinics, and grants for child care centers. Check out that, events, and more below.

Today's weather, 10/8: A couple of afternoon showers. High: 79 Low: 65.

Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Red Hat Software company has announced that all associates and contractors must be vaccinated against COVID-19 by November 29. The company stated that the requirement is in place for all US associates and contractors regardless of their work location, including remote workers. They also said exceptions would only be granted in very limited circumstances. (CRN)
  2. A man has been taken into police custody after barricading himself inside his home. Police responded to a call on Blue Ridge Road around midnight. After refusing to answer to police the home was barricaded for four hours. (CBS17)
  3. WakeMed is partnering with the state and local government to open four new antibody clinics that will provide monoclonal antibody treatment. The antibodies are free and most private insurers will cover the cost, but WakeMed Associate Chief Medical Officer, Dr. David Kirk says that even if you don't have insurance they will make sure you can get the treatment. Staff will be flown in from all over the country to help with the program. (CBS17)
  4. The city heard a six-month update on the program that regulates short-term rentals in Raleigh. The council members as well as many Raleigh residents speak in favor of short-term rentals, as they bring extra income and affordable places to stay while visiting. Since the beginning of the permit system, the city has only received one complaint about a property. (INDY Week)
  5. Day care centers may soon see a major boost from federal funding. Governor Roy Cooper announced on Thursday that North Carolina will receive $805 million from the American Rescue Plan. The money will give North Carolina day care centers the ability to apply for a grant that could award up to $60,000 per quarter depending on needs. (abc11)
