Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Federal officials are investigating the death of a co-pilot who exited the plane mid-air during an emergency landing at RDU. The small cargo plane landed in the grass at RDU around 2:40 p.m., but only one of the two men present at takeoff were on board. The body of the man believed to be the co-pilot, Charles Hew Crooks, was discovered about 30 miles south of the airport, in Fuquay-Varina just before 7 p.m. It is unclear if he jumped or fell from the plane, but authorities say he was not wearing a parachute when his body was recovered. - The Village Complex in Raleigh's Glenwood South has closed temporarily after the city of Raleigh cited it for multiple building code violations. According to his attorney, owner Dan Lovenheim voluntarily closed down the property after citations. The space was converted to a nightclub without obtaining appropriate permits. - Raleigh's Kim and Penn Holderness won the 33rd season of "The Amazing Race," and now they are giving back some of their winnings. The couple announced on Thursday that they will be giving back to teachers. Both of their mothers were teachers and in a post to their blog, they invited teachers to share their school supply wish lists in the comments, with a mission to "Clear the List" for many well-deserving teachers. - A portion of Interstate 440 was forced to close after a crash on Friday. The wreck was reported just after 1:35 p.m. at the Western Boulevard bridge. A large truck with an elevated object hit the underside of the bridge. I-440 east at Western Boulevard was closed Friday night into Saturday as crews worked to repair the bridge, and again on Saturday night into Sunday morning. The overnight closings could continue until repairs are complete. (CBS17)
- A 9-year old girl is being praised after saving a classmate last weekend at a kids birthday party. Last week, Katherine McMillan noticed her classmate at the bottom of the pool, motionless, and was able to dive down and pull him to the surface. Several others helped the boy out of the pool, and several adults performed CPR. The boy's parents had planned to get their son swimming lessons, but delayed plans due to the pandemic.
