I am actually on the tail end of my vacation and there was so much going on that I had to take a day off for real. Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- State leaders and community members held a vigil on Sunday for the victims of the mass shooting that took place in Hedingham. Governor Cooper addressed the crowd, saying "The North Carolina state legislature must act." Raleigh Mayor Mary Ann Baldwin also said, "I'm sure many of us had the same thought: not here, not us, not in Raleigh." Loved ones of the victims also got the opportunity to remember the victims. The vigil was organized by several advocacy groups, including Moms Demand Action and the Raleigh-Apex NAACP. (CBS17, WRAL)
- More than 150 people registered to be a part of the memorial ride to honor fallen Officer Gabriel Torres. On Sunday morning, a procession of motorcycles, jeeps, law enforcement and others gathered to ride for Officer Torres. Operation Fly Our Flag is a nonprofit whose mission is to honor those who serve or have served in the U.S. Nathan Sheppard, president and founder of Operation Fly Our Flag organized the memorial ride to support Torres and his family. Sheppard said it was the least they could do to honor the Marine Corps Veteran and Raleigh police officer. (CBS17, WRAL)
- Raleigh police are investigating a shooting that allegedly took place on Spring Forest Road at a Snoopy's Hot Dogs. The victim Zake Nati Pratt died from his injuries at the hospital. Suspect Kahleed Zion Blount has been charged with murder and is being held at the Wake County Detention Center. Police do not believe the shooting was random but they have not released a motive in the attack. (abc11, abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- On Sunday evening, six vehicles were involved in a crash on Interstate 40. Following the crash, eight individuals had to be transported to the hospital with injuries. The crash shut down all westbound lanes of I-40 near the border of Wake and Johnston counties. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival will be returning to Koka Booth Amphitheatre starting on November 18. The event will run through January 8 and will be open daily from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Kaka Booth Amphitheatre has been hosting the festival since 2015 and will continue to host it through at least 2028. This year there will be more than 40 new displays and nightly performances on the main stage. (WRAL)
