Happy National Dessert Day,
I have a round-up of news regarding the LGBTQ protection ordinance, continued fallout from Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson's comments, and a new cruiser in the State Capitol Police Department worth noting. Check out that, events, and more below.
First, today's weather:
Partly sunny, warm and humid. High: 82 Low: 59.
Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson hosted a press conference on Tuesday to defend the remarks he mad to a church congregation. After protestors and supporters gathered outside his office, he stood by his comments, and criticized books that are available in some schools. Durham Public Schools has a copy of one of the books in its libraries, and cited the Library Bill of Rights emphasizing that "Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation." (CBS17)
- The Raleigh City Council discussed adopting a local ordinance that mirrors the one that Wake County is considering for LGBTQ protections. More than a dozen other North Carolina cities have already adopted nondiscrimination ordinances. The Raleigh City Council could adopt the ordinance as soon as next week and Wake County officials hope others will follow suit. (WRAL)
- The Raleigh Capitol Police have added a fully electric Chevy Bolt to its fleet of law enforcement cruisers. The Bolt can go 250-300 miles between charges, but it doesn't have a cage or holding area in the backseat, so another vehicle is required for arrests. Although the Bolt was met with initial skepticism, officers are excited to utilize the new vehicle. (Police1)
- Wake County will be holding a walk-in flu clinic on Wednesdays between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm at the Public Health Center at 10 Sunnybrook Road. Doctors are concerned that this year's flu season will be far worse than last year and the risk of getting the flu is greater this year. The site will also offer COVID-19 vaccinations with an appointment. (WRAL)
- House Bill 951 has received final legislative approval and heads to the desk of Governor Roy Cooper. Governor Cooper has already tweeted that he will be signing the energy legislation that will require the Utilities Commission to take steps to reduce carbon emissions 70% by 2020. The bill has received bipartisan support. (WBTV)
