Happy World Plant Milk Day,

Today I have rounded up news involving a traffic and power disruption, a controversial business decision, a local celebrity, and so much more. Check it all out below alongside events and bonus info.

Today's weather, 8/22: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 90 Low: 76.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A Raleigh driver lost control of their vehicle on Friday, hitting a pedestrian and taking down a power pole. The incident occurred just before 7:10pm on Buffaloe Road near North New Hope Road. The pedestrian who was struck was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening. The road closure lasted for several hours and around 10:30pm Duke Energy reported nearly 15 customers still without power near the crash. It is believed that speed played a role in the incident. (CBS17)
  2. A downtown Raleigh sports apparel shop has placed a controversial sign on its front door: "Masks are prohibited." Josh Breed, owner of The Vault Raleigh believes that masks are ineffective at preventing the spread of COVID-19 and requires patrons to "show their face" while in his store. He says that the move comes from fear of thieves attempting to rob the store hiding behind face masks, however he also expressed that you can wear your mask while walking around the store, but would be asked to remove it upon approaching the register. (WRAL)
  3. Raleigh's local miniature horse typically participates in animal therapy programs through Stampede of Love, but will soon take on a more visible role. Kiwi has been cast to star in a new feature film, "Reggie," that will address mental health issues. When Jacques Belliveau set out to cast for the film, Kiwi stole the show as the underdog. Kiwi is a full-size miniature horse with a form of dwarfism making him smaller than other miniature horses, and he had a stand out personality with physical features similar to Belliveau. Belliveau will be kicking off a national viewing tour for the film in Raleigh on Monday with a Q&A following the film and a portion of proceeds going to Stampede of Love.
  4. Governor Roy Cooper has announced new appointments and nominations to North Carolina boards and commissions today. Cooper has selected 36 individuals for positions in 27 different areas. The nominees come from across the state with several hailing from Raleigh and surrounding cities. You can read all about each selection in the press release from the Governor's Office. 5. The Raleigh Fire Department is investigating a fire at a mobile home in Raleigh. At approximately 12:11pm, the department arrived to 5008 Sunny Field Dr. It took an hour to extinguish the fire, and two adults were displaced by the fire. One adult was home during the unintentional blaze, believed to be caused by cooking malfunction. No one was injured. (CBS17)
