Happy World Lizard Day Day Raleigh!

I want to apologize for yesterday's misleading information. I wrote that the gun buyback event was "today," when it is actually this coming Saturday, August 20. My daughter has had some sort of cold and was very demanding of my attention while I was trying to write. Here's to hoping that she takes an nice long nap today so I can give my undivided attention to getting everything right. Today's edition is packed with all the local happenings, :

  • Eleven injured across the Triangle on Friday night, seven from Raleigh.

Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Wake County is in desperate need of homes for foster children in the area, as North Carolina faces a social worker shortage, and diminishing group home and foster placement options. Wake County Child Welfare Co-Interim Director Sheila Donaldson said that it is a crisis situation and part of the Wake County Social Services Office has been turned into a makeshift shelter due to the shortages. Wake County is working to recruit more people willing to foster and address social worker shortages. (WRAL)
  2. Raleigh Police are investigating after a man was shot in the head, causing him to crash his car. Officers responded to Kissimmee Lane around 5:20 p.m. and found the victim dead at the scene. A second vehicle was seen driving by the victim who fired shots into the man's car in a possible drive-by. Police tape blocked off the scene for hours as officers and detectives were on the scene. Electricians were also on the scene as several homes in the neighborhood lost power following the crash. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Jahar Handse'm Hill. (abc11, CBS17, CBS17, WRAL)
  3. Six teens were injured in a shooting after a fight broke out at a private party. The event was held at a nightclub in Raleigh to mark the end of summer and start of the new school year. It was meant for teens under the age of 21. All six teens are expected to recover from their injuries, but were still in the hospital as of Saturday morning. Police have not identified a possible suspect, but they have confirmed there was only one shooter. (WRAL)
  4. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol swore in 21 new troopers on Friday after the 156th Basic Highway Patrol School. The ceremony took place at the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Training Academy in Raleigh. The oath of office was administered by Associate Justice Phil Berger Jr. of the N.C. Supreme Court. The new troopers completed over six months of courses and will report to their respective duty stations on August 31. (CBS17) The graduation comes as concerns among law enforcement are growing. Ned Byrd was the second trooper killed out of six deputies who were shot in the last three weeks. (WITN)
  5. Amazon workers in Garner distribution centers are working to organize as part of Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment, C.A.U.S.E. efforts. Workers are speaking out, saying they deserve to be treated fairly, with dignity and respect. Employees claim that working conditions aren't safe and they face discrimination. In order to pursue an official union with the National Labor Relations Board, 30% of workers must sign cards or a petition saying they want a union. North Carolina is the second least unionized state in the country according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. (abc11)

  • House of Hops is hosting a Cornhole Tournament to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation today with 10% of draft sales being donated to the cause. (1 - 5 p.m.)
  • The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has entered two of their cruisers in the American Association of State Troopers 'Best Looking Cruiser Contest.' (CBS17)
  • Sound Rivers found that the waterways at Buffaloe Road and Clayton River Walk failed the fecal bacteria test and should be avoided or enjoyed with caution. (CBS17)
