📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Raleigh who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Raleigh Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- The City of Raleigh says that it's reviewing its communication systems following residents in and around Hedingham saying they didn't receive an alert in the active shooter situation. In one 911 call, a cyclist was told of the situation and could be heard warning others in the area of the danger. The county said that an IPAWS alert could have been sent out, but officials said they don't have the authority to send it out without a Raleigh police request, which did not happen. As the city works to more successfully utilize the alert systems, you can learn more about how to set up the alerts here. (WRAL)
- SAFEchild is Wake County's sole nonprofit offering a full range of services related to child abuse intervention and prevention at no cost. On Tuesday, it broke ground on a new facility that will help triple the organization's reach. The facility is expected to welcome families beginning fall of 2023 on Kidd Road. Over the next five years, the addition will provide space for 1,200 more children in its advocacy center and serve 30,000 families with prevention programs annually. Currently Wake County sees more than 7,000 cases of child abuse and neglect annually and kids can wait up to six weeks for an appointment at the SAFEchild Advocacy Center. (CBS17)
- A Raleigh rabbi is once again speaking out after another report of antisemitic fliers being distributed to a neighborhood that is home to a large Jewish population. Rabbi Eric Solomon is asking allies to step up and speak out against the hatred. Similar fliers with antisemitic propaganda have been distributed twice in 2022, once in August, and once in January. Solomon emphasized, "It's important that there be allies, just like when any community is attacked. There are not just community people themselves, but others who stand up." (WRAL)
- A Raleigh family is mourning the loss of June Onkundi who was killed in Durham at the Freedom House Recovery Center. According to her family, Onkundi was stabbed by one of her patients while at work. Onkundi leaves behind four children and a husband. The president of the North Carolina Nurses Association released a statement on Thursday, saying, "We are heartbroken by the senseless death of our colleague and fellow NCNA member. ... She dedicated her life to helping others and we should all be proud of the impact she had on some of the most vulnerable patients." Violence against nurses and healthcare professionals has grown over the past few years and advocates hope Onkundi's death serves as a turning point for those in healthcare to address the problem. - A new study by WalletHub has ranked America's most-populated cities, and three North Carolina cities were cited among the fastest growing homicide rates in the nation. On average, homicide rates in America's most populated cities are increasing by nearly 10% in larger cities. The cities were ranked based on homicides per capita from July 2022-September 2022, change in homicides from July 2012-September 2022, and change in homicides from July 2020-September 2022. Raleigh ranked No. 14 overall in results that were compiled with data up to September 30, not including the events of this month. (CBS17)
- Raleigh Parks has announced that the popular Holiday Express event would be returning to Pullen Park this year. This marks the first time the event has returned since the pandemic. Tickets for the event have sold at a rate of nearly 1,000 per minute in past years. The 2022 event will include a holiday train ride, a blizzard bookie dance party, arts + crafts, inflatables and carnival games, a Santa experience, letter to Santa, carolers, the carousel, and s'mores.
