Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Signups for 2022 Wake County ambulance subscription services have begun. The service costs $60 annually and covers the cost of ambulance services that insurance doesn't cover for the whole household. The program is growing in popularity and anyone with Medicare or private insurance qualifies to sign up. (abc11)
  2. Rock Quarry Road has seen a major traffic backup as people head to Word of God Assembly Church to get a COVID-19 test without appointment. The church is the only Wake County site that does not require appointments. The state is also opening a new drive-thru site at PNC Arena that will operate from 7:00 am to noon on game and event days. (WRAL)
  3. Two shootings took place in the early hours on New Year's Eve. The first occurred just after 1:15 am inside the Quality Inn on New Bern Avenue, and the victim did not see who shot him. (CBS17) The second shooting involved a house party, and one man was shot just above the ankle while in attendance. (CBS17) Preliminary investigations show the incidents are not connected, and both victims are suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.
  4. The North Carolina Supreme Court decided last week that an individual justice can take two options when weighing a request for recusal. The order allows justices to decide for themselves or get the rest of their court colleagues to decide. This order should allow a long-watched case over whether the 2018 constitutional amendment requiring photo voter identification is legitimate. (WWAY3)
  5. Groups representing N.C. sheriffs, district attorneys, and Superior Court clerks are calling for the N.C. Supreme Court to reopen candidate filing for upcoming elections. The groups are not challenging the court's decision to delay elections, but they argue that shutting down the 2022 candidate filing has "caused unnecessary upheaval for candidates for public office."
