Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Reginald Monte Harrington has been arrested on multiple charges after partaking in a crime spree on Wednesday Night. The chain of events started after a domestic altercation led to him stabbing two female family members. He then fled the scene, hitting 7 other vehicles in the process, crashed his vehicle, robbed a Hibachi Buffet restaurant at knifepoint, and eventually was taken into custody at a PetSmart. The women who were harmed were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition, and the arrest took place without incident. (WJBF, WRAL)
  2. The North Carolina General Assembly is increasing its effort to rein in the governor's emergency powers during extensive emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic. GOP leaders have criticized Governor Cooper's handling of the pandemic and the extending of emergency declarations. The proposed measure would limit emergency declarations to a 7 day period, and any extension would require council's concurrence. Advocates say the pandemic marked a good time to adjust the Emergency Management Act, while opponents believe the existing checks and balances are adequate. (abc13)
  3. Community members are preparing to rally around Jeanne and John Luther, owners of the Sola Café in Raleigh. Three years ago, Jeanne was diagnosed with ALS after strange feelings in her fingers that dampened her ability to cook. Following her diagnosis the couple decided to use their already established Hot Mini 5k to raise money for ALS. The couple is looking forward to what will be a very emotional race on September 18, hoping that Jeanne makes it, and acknowledging that it could very well be her last race. John, Jeanne, and their three children are grateful for the time they have had together and find comfort in their faith. (abc11)
  4. State health leaders met with the state Board of Education to talk about the increase in COVID-19 cases in schools. The board stated that many of the 70 active clusters across the state are coming from school athletics. Children under 17 are now seeing the second-highest increase in coronavirus cases behind the 18-24 year old group. The Board of Education is still waiting for guidance from the CDC to determine when teachers and staff will be eligible to receive a booster shot. NCDHHS also stated that 106 of North Carolina's 150 school districts are currently implementing mask mandates. (CBS17)
  5. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic limiting travel, North Carolina State University has allowed 100 students to study abroad this fall, and spring 2022 has seen increased interest. The school is offering a limited portfolio of programs in about 30 countries that passed a comprehensive risk review. The program closes applications for spring of 2022 this month, but it has already had a great deal of interest and applicants. (Technician)
