Happy More Herbs, Less Salt Day,

Today I have news of an incredible fundraiser for Cancer Research, a tragic car accident, the cause of liquor shortages, and some policy news. Read all about that, events, and more below.

Today's weather, 8/29: Humid throughout the day. High: 94 Low: 75.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Saturday morning, hundreds of cyclists gathered in Raleigh to raise money for cancer research. The V Foundation's Victory Ride to Cure Cancer raised more than $1 million for research. Cyclists in attendance included families, patients, doctors, and researchers. 100% of the funds raised by riders went to Duke Cancer Institute, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center. (FOX8, CBS17)
  2. A woman died after a two-car crash that occurred around 7:00 pm near the intersection of West Milbrook Road and Town & Country Road on Friday. Barbara Ann Sabio died in the crash and two others suffered minor injuries. In May another fatal car crash happened at the same intersection and neighbors express that that particular intersection has a history of crashes. This incident is under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time. (abc11, WRAL)
  3. If you're looking to buy alcohol in North Carolina, there's a good chance you will come across an 'out of stock' sign. A spokesperson for NC's ABC Commission stated that the ongoing liquor shortage is due to many influences all happening at once. Along with supply and demand issues, the ABC stores are working with a new business that manages warehouse and delivery services. The liquor market is also still trying to catch up from the pandemic production shut downs. Local distilleries are hoping to take advantage of the high demand and fill in some of the gaps left by the liquor shortage. (abc11)
  4. After a panel of state trial judges decided in favor of restoring voting rights to convicted felons, Republican lawmakers sought to delay the order while they appeal the ruling. The panel has responded to the request, refusing to delay restoration of voting rights. The three judges that made up the panel expressed that the history of felony disenfranchisement comes from efforts during Reconstruction to prevent Black residents from voting. (FOX8)
  5. After 2 months of hearings on the bill that would legalize medical marijuana in North Carolina, it may not get a vote on the floor of the Senate. While several Republicans have led the effort to pass the bill, others believe that this will lead to full legalization of marijuana in North Carolina. Senator Ralph Hise spoke against the bill saying that people who want to legalize marijuana use people who are suffering to further their agenda. Phil Berger, the Republican Senate Leader said that they have not yet made a decision if the bill would reach the floor for a vote. (CBS17)
