Happy National Ghost Hunting Day,

Today is a doozie of a roundup. I have news about a literal fire, as well as some "fires" being lit by community members, business owners, and government employees. Check out all that, events, and a notebook that is chock full of interesting finds below.

Today's weather, 9/25: Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 76 Low: 58.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Bridges at North Hills apartment complex has experienced several fires over the past few months. The latest occurred on Thursday night and has left 25 people displaced after their units were declared unsafe to stay in. Although the units have smoke detectors, they do not have any sprinkler or standpipe system installed because it was built prior to the 2006 code update. The Red Cross is assisting the individuals who were displaced. No injuries were reported. (CBS17)
  2. The Emancipate NC criminal justice forum at Chavis Community Center saw a decent turn out of community members with questions for current District Attorney Lorrin Freeman. Although Freeman was one of four on the panel, she received very pointed questions and feedback. Many in attendance had been personally or had family members who were impacted by Wake's criminal justice system, calling it unfair and inequitable for people of color. (EmancipateNC Facebook, abc11, WRAL)
  3. After The Village District dropped the Cameron name because of its namesake who was one of North Carolina's largest land and slave holders, the Cameron Park community is now facing the same debate. The popular Raleigh neighborhood was named after the Cameron family in the 1910s. Prior to that the family was well known for their slave holdings. Voting has been going on for the past two weeks, and the results are expected to be available in around 10 days. (WRAL)
  4. It has been nearly a week since the vaccine requirement for City of Raleigh employees kicked in, and a GoFundMe has emerged threatening to sue the city for the vaccine mandate. The fundraiser claims that the mandate is an "overreach of power and medical discrimination." The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association has sent letters to the City of Raleigh questioning why promotions hinge on getting vaccinated when originally employees were able to opt for weekly COVID-19 tests in lieu u of vaccinations. The city has chosen not to comment on the matter, but mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said in a text, "We want to ensure they stay safe and the public stays safe." (CBS17)
