Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Raleigh police have released their five-day report in the death of Darryl Williams, who died in police custody. According to the report, Williams yelled that he had a pre-existing heart condition as officers used a Taser while trying to take him into custody. The report also disclosed details surrounding the attempted arrest, as officers searched a car that Williams was driving, which they believed to have discovered cocaine inside of. According to the report, officers warned Williams that he would be tased if he continued to resist arrest. According to the report, officers used a Taser on Williams three times in total as he continued to resist arrest, but after the first use Williams could be heard on the body camera saying, "I have heart problems." The State Bureau of Investigation is taking over the investigation, and the RPD will conduct their own investigation to ensure policies were followed. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL, WRAL)
  2. The North Carolina Peace Action (NCPA) is calling for the nation to destroy nuclear weapon stockpiles. In an effort to raise awareness, the group brought a replica of a nuclear bomb into downtown Raleigh. The bomb is a replica of two that were accidentally dropped, but not detonated onto a Wayne County farm in 1961. The group gathered in front of the federal building after North Carolina's U.S. Representatives, congresspeople, and U.S. Senators voted for new nuclear weapons in the budget. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  3. One Wake County school board member is calling for a community conversation about gun violence. Board member Lynn Edmonds is begging parents to keep their weapons locked up and says that we need the community to help keep guns out of the hands of children. During the Tuesday board meeting, Edmonds said, "Since our last meeting we have had another incident of a gun on one of our campuses." The call is the same as the one issued by Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson, who says the accessibility of guns to children and teens is a "disturbing trend." (CBS17)
  4. Vice President Kamala Harris will be visiting the Raleigh area on Thursday in an effort to highlight the administration's investments in small business. The trip comes shortly after the Census Bureau released a report earlier this week that showed more than 10.5 small businesses that were formed during President Joe Biden's first two years in office. The last time Harris was in North Carolina, she discussed efforts to reduce drug prices for seniors. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. North Carolina State Auditor Beth Wood has released a statement about the December 8 hit and run that she has been charged with. According to Wood, she had attended a holiday gathering in downtown Raleigh, and while leaving she made a sharp right turn, hitting the car. Wood proceeded to say that, "I was shaken by the incident and, when I was unable to move my vehicle, I left the scene." Wood also stated that she regretted her actions, cooperated with police following the incident, and was sorry to the owner of the vehicle she hit. (abc11, Spectrum News 1, WRAL)
