Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The Raleigh Police Department has officially released video footage from the arrest of Darryl Williams that led to his death. The videos begin when officers arrived to the sweepstakes parlor on Rock Quarry Road and ordered Williams and another man out of the car. Footage shows officers discovering "a white powdery substance consistent with the appearance of cocaine" in a folded dollar bill in his pocket, leading officers to arrest Williams. In the video, Williams repeatedly asks why officers are arresting him, and can be heard disclosing his heart problems. Following the "drive-stun mode" taser shocks, officers question his breathing and responsiveness and attempt life-saving measures. (abc11, CBS17, Spectrum News 1)
  2. The Wake County Sheriff's Office will be reinstating wellness check calls for senior citizens 65 or older who live alone, beginning Tuesday, February 14. Seniors wishing to participate can sign up to receive phone calls seven days a week at 9 a.m. The phone call will be an automated message asking the seniors to press 1 and hang up if they are ok, if they do not respond they will receive two follow-up calls. If the calls are not answered, a key contact will be contacted, and if they have not heard from them, a deputy will respond to the home. Details on how to sign up will be released on Monday. (WRAL)
  3. It has been a year since Wake County adopted the non-discrimination ordinance, however after a year it has only applied to a handful of complaints. Last year, 21 complaints were filed reporting discrimination based on disability, marital or familial status, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, color or age. Of the complaints filed, only five qualified under the ordinance. Danya Perry, director of diversity, equity and inclusion for Wake County says that they are working to build awareness on what actually qualifies under the ordinance. (WRAL)
  4. A graduate student from North Carolina State University was found dead in their dorm on Wednesday. Campus officials confirmed that the student was found in the E.S. King Village Apartments on campus. Campus police do not suspect foul play or suicide in the student's death, however a medical examiner will still need to determine the exact cause of death. This is the seventh student death since the start of the school year. (abc11, WRAL)
  5. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman has said that the investigation and prosecution of North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, has officially been closed. Freeman's announcement comes after federal judges deemed the libel law her office was seeking to enforce was most likely unconstitutional. Freeman says that the ruling will prevent her office from moving forward, as there is a two-year statute of limitations on misdemeanors of that nature. (Spectrum News 1)
