Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. One person died and two are in the hospital after an ambulance crash off Interstate 87 Friday. The ambulance was transporting a patient who was experiencing cardiac arrest and did not survive the wreck. The privately owned ambulance hit an ice patch, and crashed through a guardrail, overturning and falling down the embankment. (CBS17) Another accident occurred along I-40 East as a tractor-trailer turned over on the embankment near Wade Avenue. No one was injured. (WRAL)
  2. Flavor District is slated to open in fall of 2022 and will be the largest "ghost kitchen" in the Triangle. The space will allow chefs, bakers, entrepreneurs, or chain restaurants to prepare and cook restaurant-style food and deliver it to customers' homes or restaurants. The ghost kitchen industry is projected to grow from 43 billion in 2019 to more than 71 billion in 2027, and Flavor district will provide 15 separate restaurant kitchen spaces. (abc11)
  3. The seasonal emergency outreach group, Warmth for Wake, has been working to provide fuel, space heaters, and firewood to low income families for more than four decades. With the need growing and the weekend projected to remain below freezing, Thad Woodard is working to get the word out. The program runs from October to March and to receive assistance, you can call (919) 212-7083. (Spectrum News 1) The CDC is also warning people about the dangers of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning as the temperature drops. (CBS17)
  4. A domestic incident sent one person to the hospital on Thursday. According to Raleigh police, two couples got into an argument just before 12:15 pm on Thursday. Amidst the verbal argument, one of the individuals pulled out a sharp object and stabbed another. Officers confirmed that the incident was domestic, and the victim is being treated for the stab wound to the hand. The suspect has been arrested. (CBS17)
  5. With the surge in cases related to the Omicron variant of COVID-19, the role of contact tracers is changing. Contact tracers have pivoted away from trying to identify where the virus came from and are instead working to provide resources to help get people vaccinated and boosted. The Contract obtained from the North Carolina Health and Human Services reveals the state has paid an estimated $15 million for contact tracing efforts. (abc11)
