- Fallen Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd was laid to rest on Friday. Hundreds of officers and deputies from across North Carolina were in attendance. After a week long investigation, one suspect is in a Wake County jail, charged with murder, and another is in federal custody in Forsyth County. Glenwood Avenue in North Raleigh was shut down as Byrd's body was brought to Providence Baptist Church. Byrd's sister asked Governor Cooper to speak at the funeral after he presented her with the flag that flew above the State Capitol. (abc11, abc11, CBS17, FOX8, Spectrum News 1, Spectrum News 1)
- Wake County's gun buyback event takes place today, beginning at 9:00am. Several rules are in place to keep everyone involved safe. Participants must remain in their car through the process, and all occupants of the car must be 18+. Firearms should be unloaded in a case/box/bag/ or secured with a gun lock, and located in the vehicles trunk, or rear cargo area. (WRAL)
- Raleigh Police Department launched a new unit to help better connect residents to resources last August, known as the ACORNS unit. The unit aims to help anyone in crisis, but was created partially due for the demand for more resources to handle mental health related calls. How officers handle mental health crisis has been a topic across the nation, and according to data obtained, the ACORNS unit has not been utilized to handle a majority of mental commitments or suicide calls. Raleigh police have handled 3,2000 calls related to mental health commitments and more than 1,000 suicide related calls, and the unit only aided in 12 of the mental commitment calls. (abc11)
