Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- The United States Supreme Court released its decision in Dobbs V. Jackson Friday, effectively overturning the precedent of Roe V. Wade. Many North Carolina lawmakers were quick to react to the news. (abc11) After the decision was released, protests were quick to be organized across North Carolina, with two in Raleigh. (FOX8) Currently, North Carolina has a law on the books that bans abortions after 20 weeks, with limited exceptions. The law was deemed unconstitutional, but with the overturn of Roe, it could go into effect. It is unlikely that any new limits will be passed at this time as Governor Roy Cooper would likely veto any new restrictions, however the issue will likely have a large impact on this election cycle. (abc11, WNCT9)
- A state trooper was injured after a crash that stemmed from a chase. The trooper clocked a motorcycle going in excess of 100 mph on I-440. Two troopers in separate vehicles tried to keep up with the motorcycle, but were unable to apprehend the motorcyclist before crashing. Only the one trooper was injured. (WRAL) In an unrelated Thursday night crash, two people were killed. The single-vehicle crash took place on Lynn Road near Six Forks Road and the victims identities have not been released. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- An Indiana man was arrested late Thursday in connection to bank robberies in Raleigh and Holly Springs. The first robbery was June 6 at the Wells Fargo Bank off of Glenwood and on Thursday, Holly Springs police investigated a bank robbery that took place on Grand Hill Place. Investigators noted the person matched the description of the June 6 robbery suspect and they were able to positively ID the individual and transport him to the Wake County Detention Center. (CBS17)
- Hoffman & Associates announced new plans for the Seaboard Station development in downtown Raleigh. The new plan shows the first apartment building on 721 Halifax St. will be known as "The Signal" and are inspired by the "unique historic location." The area will also feature places for young adults to eat and shop and The Signal's website shows many luxury amenities that are in line with other downtown complexes. (WRAL)
- Officers have arrested two individuals following unrelated sexual assaults. Joshua David Becker was charged after an assault on a woman that took place on June 13. Becker was taken into custody by authorities in Bland, Virginia and is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina. (CBS17) Morrisville Police arrested Michael Brandon Shinn and charged him in relation to a June 16 assault. After arresting Shinn, detectives with the Huntersville Police Department connected him to another incident in their jurisdiction they believe was connected to Shinn.
