Happy World Mini Golf Day Raleigh!

I don't know about you but to me, it sure feels like Oktoberfest has signaled the beginning of fall. Maybe I'm just insane but yesterday's 88 degrees felt like heaven after this past summer. Maybe that's why I'm so excited and ready for what all is to come, and I feel like the last few days have had several things that just make the future look brighter, including:

  • North Carolina's bid for the 2027 World University Games
  • Stargazing atop the Willard
  • Fair Favorite, Dennis Cook retiring

But first, today's weather:

Sunny, very warm and humid. High: 90 Low: 67.

Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Governor Cooper has presented the state's bid to host the 2027 World University Games to the International University Sports Federation (FISU). North Carolina and Chungcheong, South Korea are finalists to host the games. Cooper said that North Carolina is uniquely qualified to welcome the 7,000 student athletes from 150 counties with campuses from Raleigh to Greensboro. North Carolina business boosters estimate that if North Carolina wins the bid, the event could bring anywhere from $150 million to $350 million to the state. (abc11)
  2. The Raleigh City Council voted to approve a speed limit change for downtown at its meeting Tuesday. On January 16, 2019, a state employee was hit and killed in a pedestrian crash downtown. Governor Roy Cooper asked the North Carolina Department of Transportation to study pedestrian safety downtown. The study has concluded and recommended improvements have been suggested. Among the suggestions were, adding leading pedestrian intervals, lowering the speed limit from 35 to 25 mph, removing dual turning movements and prohibiting right turns on red. (CBS17, WRAL) Also up for discussion at the City Council meeting was the fate of Raleigh's historic Seaboard Train Station. (WRAL)
  3. Health systems and surgery centers are once again competing to add services in Wake County. WakeMed has applied with state regulators to build a new, full-service hospital in Garner. Garner currently has a freestanding emergency department, but it has to transfer patients 10 miles to the Raleigh campus when they need more than emergency care. Due to North Carolina's certificate of need status, WakeMed must receive approval from state regulators before building the new hospital. (PublicRadioEast)
  4. On Monday, Zainab Baloch announced that she was dropping out of the race for Raleigh's District B City Council seat. The remaining candidates in district B are Minu Lee, Frank Pierce, Megan Patton and Jacob Lorberblatt. In her statement, Baloch said, "I am returning my focus on building ways to give others a voice to uplift and bring awareness to the issues that are closest to their heart." (INDY Week)
  5. North Carolina State University Police received reports of an armed robbery on Monday afternoon at a Wells Fargo just off campus. A victim said the suspect presented a note to the bank teller, demanding money and claiming they had a gun. Police say no weapon was shown during the robbery. The suspect was described as a person with a white trash bag, wearing a wig with black hair. (Fox46)
  6. Two brothers have been charged with murder in connection to the September 2 death of Lalo Catro-Ibarra. Catro-Ibarra was found dead in a Raleigh parking lot on Chapanoke Road earlier this month. Both brothers have been arrested and taken to the Wake County Detention Center. (CBS17, WRAL)

Thursday in Raleigh:

From my notebook:

  • It's World Mini Golf Day and if you haven't taken some time to just unwind and do something silly and fun lately, might I recommend a good round of putt putt. VisitRaleigh put together a list of Driving Ranges and Mini Golf in Raleigh to help you no matter how hard you putt (I myself fail miserably at mini golf because my ball always ends up across the street).
  • This year, the State Fair announced they will not have the Circle C Racing Pigs, as the pig racing announcer, Dennis Cook is retiring. (WRAL)
  • If you're looking to celebrate fall, WRAL has updated their Halloween and Fall Fun Guide!
  • Wake County commissioners voted on Monday to rename the Knightdale Boulevard Bridge over Interstate 540 in honor of fallen officer Ryan Hayworth, who was killed in the line of duty. (CBS17)
