Here are the top four stories today in Raleigh:
- In April 1960, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Shaw University. His trip to Raleigh came just after the Greensboro sit-ins and the visit consisted of discussions and workshops with King and other leaders. During his 1960 visit to Shaw University, Dr. King helped students develop their own non-violent strategies to participate in the civil rights movement. In 1966 Dr. King once again returned to Raleigh to speak in front of an integrated audience at Reynolds Coliseum at NCSU, a year after the Civil Rights Act was passed. Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson, the Dean of Arts, Sciences and Humanities at Shaw says that more than 50 years after his death, the work young people are doing today is a continuation of King's legacy. (CBS17)
- Opposing rallies were held in downtown Raleigh on Saturday as arguments surrounding abortion are playing out in state legislatures. A crowd of anti-abortion advocates gathered in Raleigh outside of the state legislative building, as many Republican leaders are planning legislation that would further restrict abortion in the state. Abortion rights activists were gathered on the other side of the street, to ensure that their position was just as visible. Currently the state bans abortion after 20 weeks, but House Speaker Tim Moore said lawmakers have discussed a 13-week ban with some exceptions. (WRAL)
- The Raleigh Police Department charged one man in connection to the incident that hurt one officer on Friday night. While the officer was stopped responding to a call about a disabled vehicle on Hammond Road when a driver rear-ended the patrol car. Police charged Reginald Rogene Morgan with felony serious injury by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, felony possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. (abc11, FOX8)
- All but one lane of Interstate 40 west was closed for an hour in southeast Raleigh on Saturday night after a wreck. The crash involving at least four cars was reported around 6:45 p.m. near exit 300 at Rock Quarry Road. According to NCDOT, all lanes were reopened around 7:45 p.m.. Westbound traffic on I-40 was still backed up when the highway was reopened. Raleigh police said that the injuries sustained by those involved in the wreck were non-life-threatening. (CBS17)
