Happy National Gingerbread Cookie Day Raleigh!

If you haven't started to thaw your turkey yet, here's your reminder as the holiday creeps up on us. I can hardly believe it's only days away. Today's Raleigh Patch Daily features some of the news that was missed this week, the newest information, and more. Read all about everything below, including:

  • Vigil for Colorado in Raleigh.
  • N.C. Native American Heritage Month Program
  • The Governors Cup

But first, today's weather:

Sunny and warmer. High: 54 Low: 27.

Here are the top four stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Police have identified the driver who was charged in the death of an 11-year-old dancer during the Raleigh Christmas Day Parade. Landen Christopher Glass, 20, was arrested and charged in connection to the incident. Family members indicated that Glass will not be making any public statements. Glass is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on January 26 after being released on bond. The name of the girl who was killed has not been released, as the family asks for privacy in this time. (WRAL) Small memorials for the young girl have been erected at the intersection of Boylan and Hillsborough downtown as well as by the door of CC & Co. Dance. (CBS17)
  2. Wake County Schools approved a plan to give school buses more supervision in response to driver concerns and staffing shortages. The plan will give current employees the ability to work as bus monitors in addition to their normal role, paying $16 an hour, scaling based on experience. Bus drivers shared multiple stories of being hit by projectiles while driving and struggling to maintain control on buses. (CBS17)
  3. Sunday was Transgender Day of Remembrance, but the day carried a more somber tone amidst events that killed five and injured more in Colorado and legislation targeting transgender rights. The LGBT Center of Raleigh hosted a Sunday evening vigil outside of the governor's mansion in Raleigh. Education and Programs director Kori Hennessey said, "With every attack on out community, physical but also legislative, our supporters become more outspoken. ... We'll be at the governor's doorstep reminding him that we're here, and we're worth fighting for." (AP News)
  4. One Triangle family is speaking out after losing thousands of dollars to what they thought was the perfect rental home. The family discovered the home for rent in Cary's Prestonwood neighborhood. Photos, along with a virtual tour depicted the home as a nice, clean space. The family felt pressured to pay $6,400 in order to secure property, but during the move in, they discovered mold, dog feces and more horror. The rental company says that the family is responsible since it did not see the property prior to moving in and claim that the family's photos were close-ups that targeted imperfections. The family's story serves as a warning to others, although the rental market is competitive, it is important to be thorough in your inspections before putting down money on a property. (abc11)
