Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Millions of people across the globe are partaking in "Dry January," and First Friday provided the perfect back drop to the theme. Raleigh's first alcohol free bar, Umbrella Dry Bar, is planning to open in the near future and owner Meg Paradise was serving up mocktails to First Friday eventgoers. Meg Mangan, a registered dietitian at UNC Rex says that even a week or a few days of not drinking can lead to improved health, including reduced anxiety and less stress. (abc11)
  2. The Durham-based nonprofit LIFE Skills Foundation will be receiving around $180,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding. The nonprofit serves young adults across the Triangle, including Raleigh and Cary, who age out of foster care. Many of the young adults are left homeless after aging out, and the foundation helps provide housing, wraparound services, and individualized support. Each year around 20 people age out of foster care in Durham, and around 30 annually in Wake County. (WRAL)
  3. On Friday night, a car crashed into a utility pole during a chase with the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The State Highway Patrol said that during the chase through Raleigh, the suspect's vehicle struck several power poles. The incident took place around 10:05 p.m., near the intersection of Fox Road and Ives Court by Interstate-540. There were no power outages reported in association with the crash. (CBS17, WRAL)
  4. The teenage victim of an overnight shooting in Raleigh has died, and police have taken another juvenile in custody. Just before 4 p.m. on Friday the Raleigh Police Department announced it they had an underaged male in custody and he was facing involuntary manslaughter charges. Authorities have not released any of the identities of the people involved in the case. (abc11)
  5. December's 2022 median price of Wake County real estate increased by $12,000 to $465,000. The increase represented a 3% jump from November 2022's level. The real-estate transactions are broken down into three distinct segments, including very high-value, high-value, and core market. Total sales from all three segments equaled more than $1.2 billion in December 2022, down 20% from November's total sales. The actual number of December transactions was only 37 less than in November, totaling 2003 transactions occurring. (WakeGov)
