Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has filed a civil lawsuit against the City of Raleigh by way of eminent domain. The NCDOT is trying to get land that it needs to work on the southeast extension of the Triangle Expressway. The NCDOT is trying to get a temporary construction easement to use land in St. Mary's Township for construction "access and parking" as it builds the highway. (abc11)
  2. The City of Raleigh has used $8 million of the American Rescue Plan act to purchase an 113-room extended-stay hotel that will help as an emergency shelter and permanent supportive housing. The Raleigh City Council identified the purchase of the hotel as a priority during its March retreat. The hotel is located on Brentwood Road and will remain under the management of the previous owner for the next 6 months. (CBS17)
  3. With COVID-19 cases continuing to climb, North Carolinians will be happy to know that a very low portion of cases have been linked to festivals and games. In the past 18 months, only 8 clusters totaling 136 cases statewide have been tied to concerts, festivals, and sporting events according to data from the State Department of Health and Human Services. (WRAL) This news is especially welcomed by hotels and others in the tourism industry as these events bring people back to Raleigh. (WRAL)
  4. A crowd gathered outside of the Governor's Mansion in Raleigh on Friday to demand justice for Dontae Sharpe who served more than 26 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit in Pitt County. Sharpe was convicted of murder in 1994 when he was 19, and was exonerated in August 2019. The Freedom Friday Vigil called for an immediate pardon for Sharpe, expressing that the state was wrong and still needs to correct its wrongdoing. (WITN)
  5. Republican legislative leaders have said that potentially as soon as Monday, they could be ready to share their budget proposal with Governor Cooper. The lawmakers are keeping their proposal under wraps for the time being in order to allow for confidentiality prior to negotiations with the Governor. The Republicans hope that by meeting with Governor Cooper prior to revealing the proposal will increase the likelihood that the two sides will be able to resolve their differences. (CBS17)
