Happy Coloring Book Day,
I bring you news of a fatal shooting in Southeast Raleigh, some insight into Cooper's mandate, and some news about what a few notable residents are doing. Check out that, Monday's events, and more down below.
Today's weather, 8/2: Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 86 Low: 71.
Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Charlie Cook Debnam died at the hospital after being shot by an unknown assailant. The incident happened on Rock Quarry Road, just after 7:30 pm Saturday night. When officers arrived the man was lying on the sidewalk and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Debnam died sometime later and the shooting is now being investigated as a homicide. Anyone with information is asked to contact Raleigh CrimeStoppers. (CBS17)
- Come August 13, the state should be releasing a policy on how they intend to go about checking vaccine status of state employees as well as testing. The 54,516 permanent and 4,376 temporary employees who fall under Governor Roy Cooper's umbrella will soon be required to prove vaccination status or undergo regular testing. Concerns have arisen over the cost of testing, however with COVID-19 relief funds and the cost of actually catching COVID-19 outweighing the testing, the state will be moving forward. (WAVY)
- The growing threat of the Delta variant has moved some to decide that now is the time to get vaccinated. Many people have expressed that they wanted to wait and see more information on the side effects, but with the growing infections of the Delta variant they are taking the plunge. With walk-in vaccination clinics like the one on Sunnybrook Road, it's easier than ever to get a dose. (CBS17)
- As North Carolina gears up for the eviction moratorium end and its aftermath, abc13 has compiled a lot of information to help give us all a better understanding. Republicans in the legislature denied Governor Cooper's attempt to extend the moratorium in NC, noting that the moratorium shifts the burden to landlords. North Carolina's Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions (HOPE) program offers rent and utility assistance to low-income renters. Legal Aid of North Carolina is a nonprofit that helps advocate for those facing eviction, however they are now seeing more than 2,000 calls a day. (abc13)
- Linguists at North Carolina State University are digging deeper into the makeup of "southern accents." Walt Wolfram has studied language for 50 years and says that North Carolina alone hosts five or six major dialects. The dialects, not to be confused with accents, span the state and are linked to a variety of cultures and roots. (WNCT9)
